Guided fly fishing in
Placencia, Belize

Second-generation guide with 25+ years experience

I offer both half-day and full-day guided charters from Placencia, plus full-day trips from Hopkins and nearby islands.

I've been guiding these flats for over 25 years, learning the craft from my father, Charlie Leslie Sr., one of the first professional guides in the country. I carry that family tradition forward with respect for the sport and the place we call home.

Chasing schools of permit on the flats

Permit down here run between 8 and 20 pounds. We find both single fish and large schools on shallow grass flats, coral patches, and reefs where they hunt crabs and shrimp. They demand a quiet approach and careful casting. Any sudden move can send them scattering, so accuracy and stealth are everything.

Tarpon in and around Placencia

Hook one, and you'll feel raw power with every jump and pull. Resident tarpon in the 20-40 lb range prowl mangroves and channels year-round, while larger migratory fish push triple digits from late spring through summer. Set the hook solidly and prepare for jumps and screaming runs.

Hunting bonefish on the shallow flats

Watch for that quick flash and get ready for a strong, steady run. Bonefish around here run between 2 and 4 pounds, though bigger ones do lurk about. Their mirror-like scales and lightning reflexes mean stealth and accurate presentations are key to hooking up.

When to come

Southern waters are fishable year-round. Bonefish are always around, bigger tarpon arrive in the warmer months, and permit are active nearly all year. Spring and early summer are prime times. Even the rainy season has advantages: fewer anglers and sudden feeding frenzies after short afternoon showers.

Gear recommendations

Fly shops are limited in Placencia and throughout the country, so showing up with your own gear makes all the difference.
